Elizabeth Park Shade Garden

Todays offering. . . a sketch from the shade garden in Elizabeth Park, an artist's sanctuary on a sweltering June day.

Elizabeth Park is famous for the rose gardens where you can wander its paths savoring the views,  transported by the enchanting perfume of hundreds of roses.

Celestial Safety Net

Celestial safety net of clouds
a billowy comforter,
bestowing sweet dreams
upon earthly beings.


Back to Goose Island, on the Connecticut River, in Old Saybrook, the same glorious sunset that's appeared in the last several paintings. This painting is smaller, 12 3/4" x 10 3/4", created to fit a bodacious frame gifted to me by a very good friend. 

And a sneak peek of the frame, before the years of gray were cleaned from it's gold leaf details . . .

Charon on Ball Pond

As night approaches
a lone boatman 
ferries across Ball Pond
the end of day
and summer.

This is an 18" x 24" acrylic painting on paper, depicting nightfall on Ball Pond in Danbury, Connecticut. The lone boatman paddling across the darkening water, reminds me of Charon of the Greeks Myths, ferrying souls across the River Styx.

Reflections on Squantz Pond

Squantz Pond in New Fairfield, Connecticut during the first week of October. Hike down the fire trail from Pine Hill to find this view, accompanied by the sounds of the water lapping and wind in the trees.

A View Out the Back Door

A view out the back door: late summer sun pouring through the clearing above, lighting this stand of trees, green gold. Soon the Barred Owl will make its first call, a booming solo "WHOOOOOO!" waking his neighbors and announcing the beginning of this evenings hunt. Watch out, you Flying Squirrels, the attic is your only sanctuary when the owl has a family to feed.

Two Fields

•
Both fields have been mowed and rolls of hay lay about like giant grazing beasts. A large flock of crows feed on the exposed grasshoppers. In the hedgerow growing flocks of starlings, blue birds, goldfinches are gathering, feeding on the chokecherries, insects and grass seeds. I hear the sound of crickets, the wing beats of a hawk passing close and farm machinery in a far field.
